MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that he has not met with former Syrian President Bashar Assad since the latter’s arrival in Moscow but intends to hold talks with him.
"I haven’t met with President Assad since his arrival in Moscow. However, I plan to do so," the Russian leader said at his combined annual press conference and question-and-answer session.
A Kremlin source informed TASS earlier that Assad and his family members had arrived in Moscow.
Bashar Assad mentioned in a statement posted on Telegram by his press service that he had not considered the possibility of stepping down or leaving the country at any point during the recent events in Syria until opposition forces seized Damascus.
Assad learned of the fall of Damascus after arriving at Russia’s military base in Hmeimim. He remarked that the situation around the Russian base had continued to deteriorate while he was staying in Latakia, and the base itself came under massive drone attacks. According to the former Syrian president, the situation prompted Moscow to order the air base’s command to evacuate him to Russia, which was carried out on the evening of December 8.
