Russia reunites children with Ukrainian families

Some children were returned through third countries, while others were sent directly to Ukraine or to their parents in EU countries

LUGANSK, December 21. /TASS/. Russia has reunited parents with their children who in the fall of 2022, having gone on vacation to children's camps on Russian territory, found themselves cut off from their families due to the shifted line of engagement, Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova told reporters.

"The children’s camps the kids went to when hostilities broke out were located in Crimea, the Krasnodar Region. The kids were not only from the Kherson Region, but also from the Zaporozhye, Kharkov Regions. However, then the front line shifted and children and parents were separated. At the moment we have one boy left in Crimea who continues to study at a higher educational institution of his own free will. His parents support his wish, we have an official document. We have worked with all the others, reunited them with their families," Lvova-Belova said.

Some children were returned through third countries, some were sent directly to Ukraine, some were sent to their parents in EU countries. The International Red Cross and various volunteer organizations helped to reunite the children with their families.

On September 10, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the regrouping of troops stationed in the areas of Balakleya and Izium in the Kharkov Region to intensify efforts in Donbass. The military-civilian administration of the region announced the evacuation.

On November 9, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops in the Kherson Region from the right bank of the Dnieper River, where the regional administration is located, to the left bank on the proposal of General Sergey Surovikin. The latter pointed out that the Russian military had successfully repelled Ukrainian attacks and that the decision to withdraw the troops was due in part to the threat of the group being stranded due to the flooding of the areas below the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.
