More than 40 people killed in earthquake in Indonesia — France Presse

The epicenter of the 5.1-magnitude earthquake was pegged at 74 km southeast of Jakarta, the country’s capital

HONG KONG /XIANGGANG/, November 21. /TASS/. Forty-four people were killed and more than 100 are missing in an earthquake in Indonesia’s Java on Monday, France Presse reported citing local authorities.

According to the news agency, the earthquake occurred in the Cianjur district in the West Java province. More than 700 buildings have been damaged, including houses, schools and hospitals.

The epicenter of the 5.1-magnitude earthquake was pegged at 74 km southeast of Jakarta, the country’s capital. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the source of the earthquake was 5 km below the surface.

According to Indra Gustari, head of West Java’s regional Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, currently there is no tsunami threat yet caution should be exercised because of potential aftershocks.
