Cargo transit over Red Sea recovering after ceasefire — newspaper

Meanwhile, some ship owners remain skeptical about the safety of passing over the Red Sea and opt for alternative, longer routes that incur greater costs

DUBAI, February 13. /TASS/. Some shipping companies are resuming cargo transit over the Red Sea following a halt in attacks by Yemen’s Ansar Allah rebel movement against commercial vessels, The National newspaper reported, citing sources.

The situation in the Red Sea waters has become relatively calm, the news outlet noted. "We can see that in the current environment, risk has reduced for us, so the insurance pricing is starting to drop. On the other hand, this reduced risk also means that some ship owners are now happier to transit the Red Sea than before," Rohan Davies, the Divisional Managing Director at Markel insurance firm, told the newspaper in an interview.

Meanwhile, some ship owners remain skeptical about the safety of passing over the Red Sea and opt for alternative, longer routes that incur greater costs, Davies observed. They view the ceasefire as too fragile, and the situation could change rapidly.

In late January, the Houthi movement declared that, amid the ceasefire in Gaza, it had ceased attacking commercial vessels, except those associated with Israel.
