Armenia sees cooperation within EAEU as factor for its economic growth — Foreign Minister

Ararat Mirzoyan stressed that the project received positive feedback from a number of international organizations and countries, including Russia

MOSCOW, January 21. /TASS/. For Armenia interaction within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) remains a factor influencing the country’s economic growth, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said after talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow.

"For Armenia, trade and economic cooperation within the EAEU also remains one of the factors influencing economic growth and fulfilment of foreign trade potential," he said.

Mirzoyan noted the importance of implementing the Crossroads of Peace transportation project, proposed by the Armenian government.

"Armenia, being at a unique crossroads, can make a significant contribution to the development of interregional communications, helping to increase the logistical attractiveness of the regions. This is what the project is aimed at," the minister said.

He stressed that the project received positive feedback from a number of international organizations and countries, including Russia.

On January 9, the Armenian government approved a draft resolution to start the EU accession process. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan argued that it would not mean Yerevan's automatic accession to the community, as this issue required a discussion and a referendum.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk explained that Russia considered Armenia's discussion of the EU accession bill as the beginning of the country's pullout from the EAEU, as accession to the EU would be incompatible with its membership of the Eurasian Economic Union. At the same time, he noted, Yerevan was the main beneficiary of EAEU membership.
