EU urges to soften sanctions on Gazprombank

Gazprombank remains the sole authorized bank to process payments for Russian gas

NEW YORK, December 6. /TASS/. The European Union is seeking after development of sanction softening mechanisms by the United States against Gazprombank, the key financial institute in support of Russian natural gas deliveries to Europe, Bloomberg reports.

The EU and the US are discussing possible options, the news agency said. European governments and companies caution that sanctions jeopardize energy security of the region.

Gazprombank remains the sole authorized bank to process payments for Russian gas. Certain countries like Hungary already applied for an exemption from sanctions to keep supplies.

The US introduced sanctions against Gazprombank in late November.
