HAIKOU /China/, Sept. 27. /TASS/. China's Ministry of Agriculture and Village has included mango fruits grown in Sanya city on Hainan Island, in the annually updated national list of environmentally friendly exemplary agricultural products of China. This was reported by the Sanya Daily newspaper.
According to the newspaper, in addition to the district of Yazhou in Sanya, the distinguished list includes 39 other administrative units that supply the market with agricultural products of exceptionally high quality. According to official requirements, exemplary products in China are those that claim a special trademark, have been thoroughly inspected by the competent government agencies and absolutely do not pose a threat to health.
The Sanya mango was registered as a territorial brand in 2011 worth an estimated 9.32 billion yuan (about $1.3 billion). Plantations of this tropical fruit in the city cover 24,000 hectares, which is considered the largest plot of cultivated land in Hainan.
Hainan plays a key role in China's seed breeding program. Breeding projects carried out in the province attract the attention of several hundred research organizations, leading universities, and enterprises every year. Thousands of specialists from different regions of China, as well as from other countries, participate in them. The fate of China's leading breeder, the "father of hybrid rice" Yuan Longping (1930-2021), who regularly visited there in winter for the past more than 50 years.
