CIS countries concerned by forecast of arms race in outer space

The CIS Foreign Ministers noted the crucial importance of immediately taking practical measures to prevent an arms race in outer space

TURKMENBASHI, Turkmenistan, October 7. /TASS/. The CIS Foreign Ministers have adopted a joint statement "on support for practical steps to prevent an arms race in outer space," the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth said.

"The CIS member States express serious concern about the real prospect of an arms race in outer space and its transformation into an arena of military confrontation, which weakens global stability. The parties note that a ban on the deployment of weapons of any kind in outer space, the use of force or threats of force against space objects or with their help could prevent the emergence of a serious threat to international peace and security. The parties also emphasize the inadmissibility of using space systems and related ground infrastructure for purposes incompatible with ensuring international peace, security and confidence-building between states," it said in a statement.

The document noted the crucial importance of immediately taking practical measures to prevent an arms race in outer space, the most effective of which remains negotiations of the international community on a multilateral legally binding and guaranteeing instrument.

"The CIS member states note the broad support for the resolutions Non-Deployment of the First Weapons in Outer Space approved at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Further Practical Measures for the PAROS (Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space - TASS) and Transparency and Confidence-Building Measures in Outer Space Activities as evidence that the international community shares their objectives in preventing an arms race in outer space," the statement said.

Meeting of the Council of the CIS Foreign Ministers was held on Wednesday in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. The document was signed by the foreign ministers of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
