Trump committed to making Greenland part of US — the White House

The US leader has repeatedly said that Greenland, an autonomous region within Denmark, should be made a part of the United States

WASHINGTON, May 19. /TASS/. American President Donald Trump still wants Greenland to become a part of the United States, White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt confirmed.

"The President maintains the reasoning for Greenland strategic purposes in the Arctic, and he continues to remain committed to the idea of obtaining Greenland in whatever means we can to advance our national security interests in the region," she said at a news conference.

Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland, an autonomous region within Denmark, should be made a part of the United States. The island’s independence was one of the key topics in the elections to the Parliament of Greenland in March. Opinion polls show that the bulk of Greenlanders would like this, but they have not yet decided when and how secession would take place. A January survey showed that only 6% of the population want to join the United States.

Trump in early May did not rule out the use of military force to resolve the issue. US Vice President JD Vance said at the end of March that the American government expects Greenland to gain independence and join the United States peacefully. Vance said that Washington was not making military threats.
