BUDAPEST, March 27. /TASS/. Hungary opposes Ukraine's rapid accession to the European Union, arguing that it is still unclear which territory would be included, Gergely Gulyas, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's Office, said during a meeting with journalists.
"Today, we are uncertain which territorial entity seeks to join the EU, as it is a partially occupied country embroiled in military conflict," the government spokesman stated.
Gulyas also warned that Ukraine's fast-track admission would inflict irreparable damage on Europe's economies.
Additionally, the Hungarian government objects to Ukraine's EU membership due to its violations of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. At a summit in Brussels on March 20, Prime Minister Viktor Orban refused to endorse a joint statement on Ukraine, which called for its swift accession to the EU and the provision of billions of euros in military aid.
Hungary plans to hold a referendum on the issue in the near future. According to Budapest, the outcome will shape its approach to further consultations with Brussels.
