Trump refuses to raise tariffs on steel, aluminum from Canada to 50% — White House

President Trump has once again used the leverage of the American economy, White House spokesman Kush Desai said

WASHINGTON, March 12. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump has abandoned his decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum supplies from Canada to the United States by up to 50% starting March 1, White House spokesman Kush Desai told reporters.

"After President Trump threatened to use his executive powers to retaliate with a colossal 50% tariff against Canada, Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke with [US Commerce] Secretary [Howard] Lutnick to convey that he is backing down on implementing a 25% charge on electricity exports to the United States. President Trump has once again used the leverage of the American economy, which is the best and biggest in the world, to deliver a win for the American people. Pursuant to his previous executive orders, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum with no exceptions or exemptions will go into effect for Canada and all of our other trading partners at midnight, March 12," Desai said in a statement.
