TUNIS, March 7. /TASS/. More than 50 officers of the new Syrian government’s security forces have been killed in clashes with armed supporters of former President Bashar Assad in the Latakia governorate, the local security chief said.

"More than 50 security forces officers have been killed in clashes in the governorate," he told the Al Jazeera television channel.

He also said that the security forces "have taken control of the city of Jableh" and will "enter the city of Qardaha within hours."

The SANA news agency reported earlier that fierce fighting was continuing in Qardaha, the hometown of the Assad family.

On March 6, clashes broke out in various areas of the Latakia governorate between Syrian security forces and armed groups supporting former Syrian President Bashar Assad. The fiercest fighting took place in Jableh, home to Alawites, representatives of the religious minority, to which the Assad family belongs.

The authorities deployed three army units and armored vehicles to the governorate and imposed curfew in large cities. The Syrian defense ministry said on Friday that control over littoral area had been regained.
