CAIRO, March 3. /TASS/. The effort to rebuild the Gaza Strip will be financed from a special fund, which, at the initial stage, is expected to attract between $2 billion and $5 billion, the Al Hadath television reported.
According to the channel’s sources in Egypt, the fund will be managed by unnamed Arab officials. The reconstruction effort in Gaza will be overseen by an ‘Arab-European committee,’ the channel reported, giving no details on whom it may include.
Al Hadath sources also said that in line with Egypt-backed plan, roads and other infrastructure sites will be repaired and mine clearance effort will begin during phase one of the reconstruction effort.
Cairo’s proposal also calls for "reviving Palestine’s law enforcement and security services," but does not elaborate on whether it will be Hamas-affiliated structures or those operated by the Palestinian National Authority in the West Bank.
Egyptian officials have not yet commented on the report.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced earlier that "the plan for rebuilding Gaza is ready" and is expected to be approved during the emergency Arab League summit to be held in Cairo on March 4. Its details have not been officially disclosed.
The Egyptian authorities started to draft their own plan for rebuilding Gaza after US President Donald Trump announced on numerous occasions that Washington was looking into the possibility of long-term Gaza ownership, and spoke in favor of relocating Palestinians to other countries in the region. Arab countries, Iran and several Western states openly opposed the US leader’s idea.
