China’s foreign minister urges Israel to honor two-state solution

Wang Yi called for a swift end to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza

BEIJING, February 16. /TASS/. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict should settled in accordance with the two-state plan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Munich.

"The fundamental method of solving the Middle East problem is to implement the 'two-state plan', which will eventually ensure the peaceful coexistence of Palestine and Israel and lead to friendly interaction between the Arab and Jewish peoples," he was quoted as saying in a statement on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry. "Responding with violence to violence will only lead to another vicious cycle."

Wang Yi called for a swift end to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.

"We hope that the ceasefire agreements will be observed effectively and this will be the basis for a comprehensive and sustainable end to the conflict," he said. "China is ready to continue to hold a just position, play a constructive role in the full and final settlement of the Palestinian issue."

According to the minister, over the more than 30 years since the establishment of China-Israel diplomatic relations, cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress and the pragmatic interaction between them is "steadily moving forward." He reaffirmed that China is willing to strengthen an innovative comprehensive partnership with Israel.

The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated following an incursion of Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip into Israel on October 7, 2023 accompanied by killings of residents of Israeli settlements near the border and taking hostages. That was followed by an Israeli ground operation in the enclave.

A ceasefire brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the US entered into force on January 19.
