MOSCOW, February 13. /TASS/. Switzerland is currently investigating 13 criminal cases related to mercenary service abroad, Swiss historian Sébastien Chazaud told TASS.
Earlier, the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed for the first time the death of a Swiss citizen fighting as a mercenary for the Ukrainian army. However, it has not provided details on the circumstances of his death, his unit, or his deployment area.
"There are currently 13 criminal cases underway concerning military service abroad. In Switzerland, serving in a foreign army is prohibited except in certain cases, such as dual citizenship or missions authorized by the country, like guarding the Vatican. Violating this law can result in up to three years in prison," Chazaud stated.
Meanwhile, the historian highlighted the widely publicized case of mercenary Jona Neidhart, who fought illegally in the Ukrainian armed forces for two years before surrendering to Swiss authorities. He was required to remain in Switzerland while awaiting trial but instead returned to Ukraine. Chazaud noted that if he were to fall into the hands of Swiss justice again, he would face a stricter punishment.
He also mentioned that Swiss politician Jon Pult has launched a parliamentary initiative seeking amnesty for Swiss mercenaries fighting for the Ukrainian army. This proposal is set to be discussed on Friday by the Legal Affairs Committee of the National Council.
