Extremists should not be in power in Syria — Hungarian foreign minister

Peter Szijjarto stressed that "special attention must be paid to protecting the rights of religious communities and minorities in full, and the security of these communities"

BUDAPEST, December 9. /TASS/. It is in the interest of Hungary and Israel that there are no extremists in power in Syria, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said after a phone call with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar.

He disclosed that the situation in Syria after the ousting of President Bashar Assad by the armed opposition was the main thing they talked about.

"We agreed that Hungary and Israel both have a vested interest in peace, tranquility and stability in the entire Middle Eastern region. It is in our interests that no extremist group capture the region or any of its countries," Szijjarto said on social media.

"We also agreed that special attention must be paid to protecting the rights of religious communities and minorities in full, and the security of these communities," the foreign minister continued.

He noted that Hungary closely monitors the status of Christian communities in Middle Eastern countries, provides them with humanitarian aid and "expects that the international community will respect the rights of religious minorities."
