Georgian president unable to become opposition leader — prime minister

Irakli Kobakhidze recalled that Salome Zourabichvili’s presidential term expires on December 29

TBILISI, December 4. /TASS/. Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili’s term of office expires on December 29, so she will be unable to become the leader of the opposition, Prime Minister Irakly Kobakhidze said in an interview with a Hungarian political YouTube channel.

"Some wish to present her (Zourabichvili - TASS) as the leader of the radical opposition. I would like to remind everyone that her presidential term expires on December 29. The attempt to make her the leader of the opposition is absolutely hopeless. Therefore, she has no opportunity to act against Georgia's interests," Kobakhidze said.

The ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia party and Zourabichvili have been at odds for several years. The tensions went into high gear after Zourabichvili refused to recognize the outcome of the October 26 parliamentary elections.

Georgia's parliamentary electoral college will elect a new president on December 14. The inauguration of a new head of state is scheduled for December 29.
