Austrian chancellor claims Russia may interfere in election in his republic

According to Karl Nehammer, Russia is allegedly trying to set up a network of various groups in the European Union and develop its channels of information

PARIS, April 6. /TASS/. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer claimed that Russia was allegedly trying to influence the European Parliament election campaign and may also interfere in the parliamentary vote in his republic.

"Russia has been trying to influence the European election, and I think that the same will happen to our national election. We must protect ourselves from that and expose disinformation campaigns," the head of Austria’s government said in an interview with Le Figaro.

According to Nehammer, Russia is allegedly trying to set up a network of various groups in the European Union and develop its channels of information. "That is a threat to entire Europe," he claimed.

Earlier, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron’s allegations that Moscow would probably try and disrupt the Paris Olympics as unfounded and unacceptable.

Elections for the European Parliament will take place on June 6-9, 2024, while Austria is scheduled to hold its parliamentary election next fall.
