US veto on Gaza resolution shows UNSC at impasse — Iran’s MFA

The US "favors the continuation of the barbaric aggression against the Palestinian people," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said

DUBAI, December 11. /TASS/. The US veto on the UN humanitarian resolution dedicated to the situation in the Gaza Strip is evidence that the organization’s Security Council is at an impasse, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said.

"Discussions in the Security Council have shown that it has failed to fulfill its duty and effectively maintain international peace and security," the diplomat was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency. "The US veto shows a deadlock within the Security Council."

The US "favors the continuation of the barbaric aggression against the Palestinian people," he went on to say.

On December 8, the US vetoed a UAE-sponsored humanitarian resolution in the UNSC, which called for an immediate ceasefire in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Thirteen of the 15 members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, voted for the resolution, while the UK abstained. This is the second time the US has blocked a UNSC resolution since the conflict started to escalate.
