Cuba interested in fast-track entry to EAEU, says PM

It is stated that Cuba is also working on strengthening ties with the sector of tourism of the Union’s countries

ALMATY, February 3. /TASS/. Havana is interested in accelerating the process of its EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) entry, favoring the expansion of ties with the integration, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero said at the meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on Friday.

"Cuba as an observer state confirms its interest in accelerating our entry to this integration mechanism and its readiness to honor the status granted to us sightly over two years ago. We still favor the development and strengthening of relations with the EAEU as a mutually beneficial partner," he said.

Last year, amid "notable economic shocks and touchy international situation," the EAEU demonstrated its ability "to resist and overcome such challenges most successfully," PM said. "Together with expansion of trade and economic relations, we prioritize the expansion of cooperation in the area of investment and industrial cooperation, as well as the development of food and energy security," he added.

"Cuba is also working on strengthening ties with the sector of tourism of the Union’s countries, relying on the experience acquired in working with the Russian Federation, particularly in the area of corporate wellness tourism," Marrero said, inviting the EAEU countries’ representatives attending the meeting "through the mediation of their government, entrepreneurship entities and businessmen to partake in the international tourism fair that will be held in Cuba’s capital in May 2023."

The EAEU is an international organization for economic integration, which includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, while Cuba, Moldova and Uzbekistan have an observer status.
