Latvia records first COVID-19 case in a cat

Latvia reported its first COVID-19 case on March 2, 2020

RIGA, February 2. /TASS/. Latvia has reported the first COVID-19 infection in a pet, chief infectionist of the national Health Ministry Uga Dumpis said, noting that a cat tested positive.

"A first COVID-19 infection was identified in a cat in Latvia, several more cats tested positive for antibodies to the novel coronavirus," he said at a parliament commission meeting.

The LETA local news agency cited him as saying that Latvia is the first country in that part of Europe where a pet Covid case was recorded. Overall, the chief infectionist said that 240 cats were tested, some of them are pets of confirmed coronavirus patients. The samples were tested on January 31.

Latvia reported its first COVID-19 case on March 2, 2020. Currently, the country has recorded 67,427 cases and 1,219 deaths, while 1,070 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals. The country launched its vaccination campaign on December 28, 17,095 people have received the first shot, while 6,644 people have had both jabs. The national state of emergency is effective until February 7.
