MOSCOW, December 12. /TASS/. Russia's Alina Korneeva has been recognized as the 2023 world junior champion according to the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the organization's press service reports.
"I am so happy with the results that I have had this year and, of course, I am so happy to be the year-end No. 1," the ITF cited Korneeva as saying. "But I do not want to stop there. I cannot wait for next season, and I hope it will bring some new things," she added.
Korneeva is 16 years old, and is ranked 176th in the WTA rankings. She finished the season ranked number one in the ITF rankings. In 2023, the Russian won two junior Grand Slam singles tournaments - the Australian Open and the French Open. She also reached the semifinals at the junior Wimbledon. In October, Korneeva won the Junior World Tour Finals.
The Czech Republic's Lucie Havlickova was recognized as the 2022 World Junior champion. Previous Russian junior world champions include Anna Kournikova (1995), Lina Krasnoroutskaya (1999), Svetlana Kuznetsova (2001), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (2006), Daria Gavrilova (2010), Irina Khromacheva (2011) and Anastasia Potapova (2016).
