Russia’s upper house approves law on criminal liability for calls for sanctions

Russia’s Criminal Code will be supplemented with an article envisaging a fine of up to 500,000 rubles for calls on foreign states or companies to impose new or extend the existing sanctions against Russia, its citizens or Russian legal entities

MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. Russia’s Federation Council, or upper house of parliament, on Friday approved a law imposing criminal liability of up to three years behind bars for calls for further anti-Russian sanctions.

Russia’s Criminal Code will be supplemented with an article envisaging a fine of up to 500,000 rubles (4,429 US dollars) or a fine worth the convict’s aggregate wages for up to three years for calls on foreign states or companies to impose new or extend the existing political or economic sanctions against Russia, its citizens or Russian legal entities.

Other punishment options are custodial restraint, correctional labor for a term of up to three years, an arrest for a term of up to six months, an arrest for a term of three years with a possible fine of up to 200,000 rubles (1,759 US dollars) or the convict’s wages over up to one year.
