ANKARA, March 19. /TASS/. The dollar value against the Turkish lira has surged sharply by more than 11%. According to online trading data, the lira rate ranges from 40.8 to 41.2 to the dollar right now.
The Turkish currency has therefore hit a new all-time low again. This comes amid arrest of the opposition mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu who is facing corruption and terrorism support charges.
Some local economists expect the dollar exchange rate against the lira to remain in the range of 38.7-40.6 during further trading. However, it is not ruled out that by the closing of trade, it will still settle at the mark below 40 to the dollar. The Turkish market only expected the dollar value against the lira to rise above 40 by fall.
The euro against the lira currently trades at 42.7, having gained 6% since the start of the day. The pound sterling has also advanced around 6% as it trades against the lira at 50.8. Overall, all the main foreign currencies are up against the lira by more than 4%.
The ruble has also strengthened against the lira: its rate was 2.23 rubles per lira by the previous closing on March 18, while the ruble has rebounded around 10 kopecks by now.
