ARKHANGELSK, March 3. /TASS/. The freight turnover of marine shipments in the port of Arkhangelsk gained 30% annually in 2024, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Industry of the Arkhangelsk Region told TASS.
"We had a positive change in the cargo mix. Marine shipments moved up. We also have riverine shipments, they are also rather bulky, but marine shipments prevail in respect of riverine ones now. This is on account of export and import shipments; we actually did not have export and import shipments over the last five years. Exports and imports are now above a million metric tons. Such shipments gave a significant impetus to cargo traffic buildup and cargo mix change," Viktoria Pestova said.
The Arkhangelsk Seaport is one of main points of origin for the China’s NewNew Shipping Line. Marine transportation from Archangelsk are also part of the Arctic Express 1 project.
"We set an ambitious task of increasing the number of voyages for the Arctic Express 1. The second point is to bring new cargoes in and, maybe, to interact with new countries. For example, Malaysia, the great interest is in place; India is also interested in the Northern Sea Route. We need to build up international cooperation, promote our port on all the possible floors, so that other countries know that there is Arkhangelsk with its advantages and the opportunity of ship via our port almost any goods to any destination, and eastbound or westbound ones over the Northern Sea Route," she noted.
The Arkhangelsk Seaport has become an alternative port for export deliveries of mineral fertilizers. Shipments from the port are carried in big bags. More than 500,000 metric tons of fertilizers have been shipped since April 2024 to African, Asian and Latin American countries. "In other words, our port is playing a very important role in supporting food security of other countries," the official said.
Capacities of the port enable receiving and dispatching up to 11 mln metric tons of cargoes.
