MOSCOW, February 13. /TASS/. Rosatom is interested in playing a role in high-tech ventures in Serbia, and welcomes the participation of Serbian companies in the state-run corporation’s projects in third countries, Rosatom’s press service has reported
Chief Executive Officer of the corporation Alexey Likhachev relayed this information to the Serbian government at a recent meeting, according to the report.
"On February 13, 2025, meetings between Chief Executive Officer of the Rosatom state corporation Alexey Likhachev and President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic, as well as Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin, were held in Belgrade," the report said.
During the meetings, the sides discussed boosting cooperation in the area of energy use of nuclear technologies, engaging Serbian companies in Rosatom’s projects in third countries, educating Serbian citizens in Russian universities on nuclear-related professions, as well as the potential participation of Rosatom’s enterprises in high-tech ventures in Serbia.
Minister in charge of international economic cooperation matters in the Serbian government Nenad Popovic said in an interview with TASS earlier that Belgrade is considering lifting its moratorium on nuclear research. If they do so, Rosatom has indicated that it is ready to exchange best practices on the construction of large and small nuclear power plants, he said. Moreover, Serbia sees value in cooperating with Rosatom in the area of cancer treatment given the republic’s high incidence rate in connection with NATO’s attacks with depleted uranium shells in 1999, the minister added.
Serbia has a law on its books from 1989 that bans officials from even talking about building nuclear energy and nuclear fuel cycle facilities in the country. At the moment, the leadership of the Republic of Serbia is considering the possibility of lifting the ban.
