Hainan wraps up construction of the longest tunnel on the island

It is currently the longest tunnel in the province

HAIKOU, October 12. /TASS/. The construction of the longest tunnel on Hainan has been completed in Wuzhishan, with the mountains of the same name popular with tourists located nearly. The ceremony was held at one of the sections of the tunnel in Baoting County, according to www.hinews.cn.

The builders succeeded in laying the tunnel in the difficult mountainous terrain seven months ahead of schedule for this phase of the construction. Its total length exceeds 4.8 km. The tunnel is designed for traffic in both directions at a speed of no more than 100 km/h. It is currently the longest tunnel in the province. This project also takes the first position in terms of the amount of funding invested in it.

The tunnel is part of the Shanghai Highway with a total length of 56 km. This highway starts in Wuzhishan, passes through Baoting County and ends at Haitanwan Bay in the resort city of Sanya.

The construction of road infrastructure on Hainan is an important part of the government's plans to turn the province into an international center for tourism and consumption. The Chinese island is often called the "Eastern Hawaii" — natural landscapes, rainforests, a developed hotel chain combined with beaches and a coastline of more than 1,900 kilometers attract guests from the most remote parts of the world.

In 2019, over 83 million tourists visited Hainan, both from other regions of China and from abroad.
