Lithuania's army to acquire anti-tank mines for €50 mln from domestic market

Until now, Vilnius has purchased most of its anti-tank mines from abroad

VILNIUS, March 14. /TASS/. The Lithuanian Armed Forces will purchase €50 million worth of anti-tank mines from local manufacturers, Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas said on national LRT radio.

"A total of €50 million has been allocated for the purchase of anti-tank mines. The mines will be sourced from Lithuanian manufacturers, ensuring that the funds remain in Lithuania and can be used for defense investments," he said.

Until now, Vilnius has purchased most of its anti-tank mines from abroad. Lithuania plans to spend a total of €600 million on developing mine production over the next decade. According to the prime minister, part of these funds may be used for the production of anti-personnel mines after Vilnius’ planned withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which bans their use, production, and storage.

Lithuania is expected to withdraw from the convention alongside Estonia, Poland, and Finland, which also border Russia.
