Moldova says delay in receiving Moscow envoy’s credentials no violation of 1961 convention

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry handed a note to Moldovan envoy to Moscow Lilian Darii, demanding an explanation for the situation

CHISINAU, March 6. /TASS/. Chisinau’s delay in receiving Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov’s credentials does not violate the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Telegram.

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry handed a note to Moldovan envoy to Moscow Lilian Darii, demanding an explanation for the situation.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country remained committed "to international norms regarding diplomatic relations." The ministry also pointed out that it was up to the host country to decide on arrangements for credentials ceremonies.

Ozerov said in late February that he was "still waiting for the procedure to take place." According to the diplomat, he arrived in Moldova on October 4, 2024, after a formal approval for his appointment had been received. On October 24, he handed over the copies of his credentials, which, under international law, gave him full authority as ambassador. However, the Moldovan president still has not accepted his credentials in an official ceremony.

Relations between Chisinau and Moscow cooled in 2021 after Moldovan President Maia Sandu and her pro-European Action and Solidarity Party came to power. They worsened significantly in 2022, when Moldova joined sanctions on Moscow and demanded the expulsion of several dozen employees of the Russian Embassy from the country. Moscow retaliated in kind. However, the Russian Foreign Ministry urged the Moldovan authorities to abandon their confrontational rhetoric, pointing out that Moscow remained committed to friendly relations with Moldova and took no pleasure in the fact that the West was using Moldova for anti-Russian purposes.
