During EU summit, Hungary to oppose continuation of Ukrainian conflict — top diplomat

Peter Szijjarto emphasized that Hungary supported US President Donald Trump’s efforts aimed at putting an end to the conflict

BUDAPEST, March 3. /TASS/. During the European Union summit on March 6, Hungary will oppose any decision aimed at allowing the conflict in Ukraine to continue, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto told reporters in Budapest.

He said that Hungary supports US President Donald Trump’s efforts aimed at putting an end to the conflict.

"An agreement between the United States and Russia is the only road to peace in the region, that is why we will also participate in European discussions on the subject," Szijjarto said.

At the same time, he noted "strategic differences in approaches," which "cannot be bridged with the help of communication tricks or formulations in official documents."

That is why Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has suggested not to adopt any vague general statements about helping Ukraine and instead express support for a neutral UN Security Council resolution, adopted on February 24, Szijjarto said. Otherwise, there will be a rift in the European Council if it tries to adopt a joint statement and a package of military aid to Ukraine.

"We believe that it [the rift] should better be avoided," the top Hungarian diplomat said.

Late last week, Orban issued a letter to European Council President Antonio Costa calling for direct talks between the European Union and Russia. He also warned Costa about the need to maintain European unity.

When asked why Hungary was not invited to attend a summit of several European countries and Canada in London, Szijjarto replied that Budapest does not participate in conferences that support hostilities.

"We don’t want to protract the conflict. We want peace," he explained.
