Trump’s adviser neither confirms nor refutes his call with Putin

Mike Waltz said that US president is determined to settle the Ukrainian conflict and for these ends he is ready to impose sanctions and tariffs

NEW YORK, February 9. /TASS/. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has neither confirmed nor refuted that President Trump had a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

"Tthere are certainly a lot of sensitive conversations going on," he said in n interview with NBC News when asked whether such a phone call took place.

He said that Trump is determined to settle the Ukrainian conflict and for these ends he is ready to impose sanctions and tariffs. According to Waltz, the US secretary of state, the secretary of defense, the vice president and the special envoy for Ukraine and Russia would go to Europe next week to talks "through the details of how to end this war and that will mean getting both sides to the table".

Earlier, The New York Post cited Trump as saying that he had discussed settling the Ukrainian conflict with Putin over the phone.

Meanwhile, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that he could neither confirm nor refute these reports. "What can be said about this news: as the administration in Washington unfolds its work, many different communications arise. These communications are conducted through different channels. And of course, amid the multiplicity of these communications, I personally may not know something, be unaware of something. Therefore, in this case, I can neither confirm nor deny it," he said.

In recent weeks, Trump has said many times that he wants and is ready to talks to Putin. However, no official information about their contacts have been announced so far.

Putin’s last call with Trump, according to the Kremlin website, took place on July 23, 2020.
