CAIRO, December 10. /TASS/. Palestine’s HAMAS movement allegedly handed over to Egypt the full list of names of Israeli hostages currently held in the Gaza Strip, the Al Arabiya television reported.
Neither HAMAS nor Egypt has confirmed the reports so far.
According to the channel’s sources, mediators are currently in intense talks on a possible ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, exerting pressure on Israel to make it withdraw its troops from the so-called Philadelphi Corridor, a strip of land on the border between Egypt and Gaza.
According to the channel’s sources, the Palestinian National Authority is supposed to take control over the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
The Al Qahera Al Ekhbariya television channel said on Tuesday that an Israeli delegation arrived in Cairo for talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Prior to that, a HAMAS delegation visited the Egyptian capital. On December 8, its members discussed matters of a possible ceasefire and post-conflict administration of the enclave with Egyptian General Intelligence Service chief Maj. Gen. Hassan Mahmoud Rashad.
In late November 2023, a temporary humanitarian ceasefire was brokered by Egypt and Qatar, which lasted for a week. During this time, 110 hostages were released, according to Israel. On December 1, the ceasefire was violated and hostilities resumed. Several rounds of consultations involving Qatar, the US and Egypt were held in August but the parties to the conflict failed to reach a deal.
Negotiations on the subject intensified once again last week. Qatar resumed its mediation, while Israeli officials announced an intense diplomatic effort that may lead to the release of the remaining hostages. According to the latest data of the Israeli side, 101 hostages are still being held in Gaza. Hamas says that 33 Israeli hostages held by various groups in the Gaza Strip have died over the period of Israel’s military operation in the enclave, and more have gone missing.
