DOHA, December 7. /TASS/. UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has called for arranging talks on a political settlement in the Arab republic, an idea supported by several parties.
"I have just met the ministers of Iran, Russia and Turkey together, and I've also had consultations with representatives from the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany and the European Union," the UN Secretary-General's press service quoted him as saying in Doha. "I have called for urgent political talks in Geneva to implement Security Council resolution 2254. I'm pleased to say that the ministers and all I'm talking to are backing this call. My hope is that I will be able to announce a date for this very soon," the envoy said.
On November 27, the Jabhat al-Nusra extremist group (banned in Russia) carried out a major attack in northern Syria. The Syrian military command later said the army had to fall back from Aleppo to regroup and prepare for a counterattack.
On December 5, the command of the Syrian Armed Forces announced that militants infiltrated into several neighborhoods of Hama. According to a statement from the command, government forces in charge of defending Hama were pulled out of the city.
