BERLIN, December 7. /TASS/. The Alternative for Germany party nominated its co-chairwoman Alice Weidel as a candidate for chancellor in the elections scheduled for February, the DPA news service reported.
In her first speech to the news media as a candidate, she called for peace in Ukraine and an end to weapons supplies to the country.
"We want peace in Ukraine. We don't want arms deliveries, we don't want any tanks, we don't want any missiles. We do not want Taurus missiles to be delivered to Ukraine because by doing so Germany would become a party to the conflict," Weidel said.
"It can never be done together with the AfD. We are the party of peace, and if you don't want to have a war in Germany, then choose the AfD," she said, referring to the party by its German acronym.
Weidel said politicians that propose transferring Taurus missiles to Kiev can go to the battlefield in Ukraine themselves but should "leave the German armed forces alone."
On December 16, the German parliament is set to consider a vote of confidence in the cabinet of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. If the event of a no-confidence vote, Germany will hold elections on February 23, 2025. The AfD has a support rating of 18%-19%, the second-highest in the country.
