Ukraine's mistake to abandon peace talks under US, UK pressure — Orban

The Hungarian prime minister has repeatedly stated that the Ukrainian conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield and should be settled at the negotiation table

BUDAPEST, December 6. /TASS/. Ukraine made a critical mistake in 2022 by refusing a peaceful settlement of the conflict with Russia under pressure from the United States and the United Kingdom, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview on the morning program of Kossuth Radio.

"Ukrainians are in a very challenging position right now. I think they chose the wrong strategy in April 2022 when a peace agreement with Russia was possible. They didn’t do it under pressure from the Anglo-Saxons, and since then they have been receiving such misguided advice from their friends in America," said the Hungarian Prime Minister, referring to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s remarks about lowering the conscription age in Ukraine.

Orban has repeatedly stated that the Ukrainian conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield and should be settled at the negotiation table. He has also emphasized that this goal can only be achieved with the involvement of the United States and the European Union, as the conflict in Ukraine affects the entire European security system.

Russia has expressed its readiness to discuss the issue based on a comprehensive consideration of the legitimate interests of all parties. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed his interest in ending the conflict in Ukraine "as soon as possible and, of course, by peaceful means," on October 18, during a meeting with heads of media outlets from BRICS countries. He also stated Russia's willingness to return to negotiations based on the agreements signed with the Ukrainian side in Istanbul in the spring of 2022.
