Orban shoulders no responsibility for EU’s decision on Ukraine — PM’s advisor

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban walked out of the EU’s summit room when it was decided to start accession negotiations with Ukraine, as he believed it was wrong and he was not eager to take on responsibility for such a step, Balazs Orban, the Hungarian prime minister’s political adviser and namesake, who was with the prime minister at the EU summit in Brussels, said.

"Hungary’s position if crystal clear and steadfast: we do not think Ukraine is ready for talks with the European Union. That is why we warned against the start of negotiations. However, the 26 EU member states believe otherwise, and therefore, after several hours of debate, Hungary decided to leave the summit room and not to take part in the vote so as not to obstruct the decision or shoulder responsibility for this wrong decision," he wrote on his Facebook page (the social media owned by US corporation Meta that is outlawed as an extremist organization in Russia).

Furthermore, the prime minister’s advisor emphasized that the subsequent decisions on Ukraine’s potential accession would also require consensus in the EU. According to Balazs Orban, today the EU leaders adopted "a fundamental decision, after which the member states will have to reach a unanimous agreement on drafting a practical negotiation package, as in the next few years, Ukraine’s accession to the European Union should be unanimously supported at least 70 times during the negotiation process."
