Putin slams EU, says bloc’s nations neglect citizens’ welfare to please ‘overseas master’

The Russian President noted that the prices at which Russia sold gas to Europe were way lower than the current price levels on the spot market

MOSCOW, March 31. /TASS/. Countries of the European Union are ready to disregard the welfare of their citizens in order to please their overseas master, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting covering the country’s aviation industry.

"Judging by the statements of some politicians, they are ready to neglect the interests of their citizens just to please their overseas master, their overlord," he contended.

Putin noted that the prices at which Russia sold gas to Europe were way lower than the current price levels on the spot market. "Russian gas means cheaper energy, heating and electricity in the homes of Europeans, as well as affordable fertilizer prices for European farmers, and, consequently, affordable food prices. Besides, it means the competitiveness of European companies and the salaries of EU citizens," the Russian head of state explained.

Putin slammed European politicians’ attempts to oppose Russia as "some kind of populism turned inside out." "They call on people to eat less, dress warmer to save on heating costs and give up traveling <...> for the sake of abstract North Atlantic solidarity," the Russian president noted.
