Sabalenka's hard-court dominance earns her WTA Player of the Year Award — Chesnokov

"There were actually no other candidates to contest her," the finalist of the 1995 Davis Cup said

MOSCOW, December 10. /TASS/. The WTA made the right call naming Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka the Player of the Year, former Russian tennis great Andrey Chesnokov told TASS on Tuesday.

Up against Sabalenka for the award were Poland’s Iga Swiatek, who won the 2024 French Open, China’s Zheng Qinwen, the gold medalist at the 2024 Summer Olympics in France, and Jasmine Paolini of Italy, who won the gold at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in women’s doubles.

"The choice was obvious probably regarding this nomination," Chesnokov, the finalist of the 1995 Davis Cup, said. "Sabalenka finished the season in the top of the world rankings, won two Grand Slam tournaments.

"There were actually no other candidates to contest her," he continued. "She played amazingly throughout this year, it was extremely difficult to stop her playing on hard courts."

"She deserved this award," Chesnokov added.

According to an official statement from the WTA’s press office: "Aryna Sabalenka has been voted as the Player of the Year for the first time in her career following a stellar season on the Hologic WTA Tour."

"The 26-year-old reached seven finals across 2024 and won four titles, defending her Australian Open title, lifting her debut US Open crown and winning WTA 1000 events at the Cincinnati Open and the Dongfeng Voyah - Wuhan Open. She recaptured the PIF WTA World No.1 Ranking in October and ended the season in the year-end No.1 position following her fourth consecutive WTA Finals qualification," the statement added.

Neutral status of Russian, Belarusian tennis players at int’l tournaments

On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason.

Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February 2022, most global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) ruled on March 1, 2022, to suspend the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations and also canceled all previously scheduled tennis tournaments in the two countries.

On March 14, 2022, the ITF also confirmed its prohibition on the Russian and Belarusian national tennis teams from participating in the 2022 Davis Cup and 2022 Billie Jean King Cup.

However, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) allowed players from Russia and Belarus to continue competing in WTA and ATP tournaments, but only under a neutral status.
