Russia sole heir to Ancient Rus — Security Council Deputy Chairman

Dmitry Medvedev criticized as "delusional" the so-called "Rus-Ukraine" paradigm, popularized by Ukrainian historian Mikhail Grushevsky "and his chauvinistic and xenophobic supporters" in the early twentieth century

MOSCOW, December 13. /TASS/. Russia, not Ukraine, is the sole successor of the state of Ancient Rus, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev stated.

"The sole successor of Ancient Rus is Russia, with Russians and Ukrainians being not just fraternal peoples, but one people," the politician wrote in his article titled "About National Identity and Political Choice: Russian and Chinese Experience."

He criticized as "delusional" the so-called "Rus-Ukraine" paradigm, popularized by Ukrainian historian Mikhail Grushevsky "and his chauvinistic and xenophobic supporters" in the early twentieth century. "Back then, they needed to fabricate grounds for ‘political Ukrainianness’ succeeding the state of Ancient Rus," he claimed. Medvedev alleged that this project was "conceived and closely monitored by the Austrian command in Western Ukraine" and aimed at "prolonging Ukrainian history back through the ages, misappropriating the past of Rus, and forming a special anti-Russian identity among the population." He argued that "this simulacrum would not have come into existence without the participation of interested external forces."
