Russia’s main New Year’s tree to arrive in Kremlin

It is 25 meters high

MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. Russia’s main New Year’s fir for the Kremlin’s Cathedral Square will arrive in the Moscow Kremlin at around midnight on Wednesday.

The Spassky Gate in Red Square will be opened for the truck that transports it.

The 90-year-old fir was cut down near the settlement of Znamenka, not far from the town of Mozhaysk some 110 km west of Moscow. It is 25 meters high. It took about two days to gently pack the tree and load it onto a special truckbed. The driver will wear a costume of Father Frost, Russia’s New Year gift bringer.

Once the fir is installed, workers will begin decorating it.

Since December 1996, the Kremlin’s Cathedral Square has been hosting living holiday trees for every year-end festival. In 2001-2004, severe winter temperatures prompted a substitution of the living tree for an artificial one.
