Russia examines reports on US links to Kiev opposition, but distrusts media — Kremlin

"We carefully analyze all the information and review it," Dmitry Peskov said

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. Russia is analyzing information on contacts between the US government and the Ukrainian opposition but does not trust anonymous media sources, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated during a press briefing.

"There are many reports now, mostly citing various sources. It is impossible to determine what is true and what is false," the spokesman said. "We carefully analyze all the information and review it. However, this is not a reason to make any assessments or comments," Peskov added.

Politico reported on alleged ongoing confidential negotiations between the United States and prominent opposition leaders in Kiev, including former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. The newspaper emphasized that these discussions center around Ukraine's future presidential election, which is anticipated to lead to the ousting of Vladimir Zelensky.

Moscow has previously challenged the legitimacy of Vladimir Zelensky, who refers to himself as the head of the Ukrainian state. The Ukrainian constitution does not allow for the postponement of presidential elections during martial law (which Kiev cited as the reason for not holding the vote). As a result, Zelensky's powers are set to expire on May 20, 2024.
