Russia’s UN envoy sees Israel’s statements on Golan Heights as contradictory

According to the diplomat, Syria's mission to the UN on Monday sent a letter to the organization's secretary-general and Security Council

UNITED NATIONS, December 10. /TASS/. Russia's envoy to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said Israel made contradictory statements on the Golan Heights.

"We are hearing contradictory statements from Israel," he told reporters in comments on statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "We do not know what part of the Golan Heights he regards as part of Israel, considering their violation of the buffer zone."

According to the diplomat, Syria's mission to the UN on Monday sent a letter to the organization's secretary-general and Security Council in which it brought up Israel's "violation of the agreement" on the Golan Heights and "Israel's continued aggression against Syria."

The aggression "continues as we speak," Nebenzya said.

Syria’s armed opposition units started a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates on November 27. By the evening of December 7, they seized several large cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered Damascus while government troops withdrew from the city. Bashar Assad resigned as president and fled the country.

On December 8, Israel took control of the Syrian side of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights, encountering no resistance. According to Netanyahu, the 1974 separation of forces agreement with Syria is no longer valid because Syrian troops left the area after the change of power in Damascus.
