OSCE does not represent 'any substance' for Russia to rely on — Lavrov

"The principle of consensus has been violated, the secretary-general and the OSCE president, who change annually, blatantly take one side," the top Russian diplomat noted

ANTALYA, March 1. /TASS/. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) does not represent "any substance" for Russia to rely on, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a diplomatic forum in the Turkish city of Antalya.

"The OSCE has failed to do anything, although this very organization was the platform where all these bombastic decisions (on a treaty on European security - TASS) were made. For us this structure no longer represents any substance that can be relied on," Lavrov said.

"The principle of consensus has been violated, the secretary-general and the OSCE president, who change annually, blatantly take one side," Lavrov added.

On December 17, 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a treaty with the United States on security guarantees, as well as an agreement on measures to ensure the security of Russia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s member states. Russian-US consultations on these issues were held on January 10, 2022 in Geneva. A meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held on January 12 in Brussels, and on January 13 the above initiatives were discussed at a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna.

On January 26, 2022, the United States and NATO handed over to Russia written responses to the proposals on security guarantees. The US asked not to make the texts of these documents public, but US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg disclosed their main provisions. According to these statements, the West did not make any fundamental concessions to Russia.
