Ukraine refuses to allow Russian gas to transit through its territory — Moldovan Deputy PM

"Ukraine will not agree to preserve transit for Hungary and the Republic of Moldova only," Oleg Serebrian noted

CHISINAU, December 13. /TASS/. Ukraine will not agree to allow Russian gas to pass through its territory for further delivery to Moldova, Deputy Prime Minister of the republic Oleg Serebrian said.

"It is now clear there will be no transit. I conveyed this information to Tiraspol that was received from very credible sources that Kiev would not agree to this transit," the official said on the air with PRO TV.

The problem of gas transit via Ukraine was further complicated when Austria found an alternative to Gazprom, Serebrian noted. "Ukraine will not agree [to preserve transit] for Hungary and the Republic of Moldova only," he added.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the unrecognized Republic of Transnistria issued a statement calling for Moldova to join with them in addressing Ukraine and Russia about preserving gas supplies.

Moldova and Transnistria have already both declared a state of emergency due to the threat of an energy crisis, which could be triggered by a shortage of electricity.
