PARIS, February 28. /TASS/. The Russian Consulate General in Marseille has heightened security measures following an attack on the diplomatic mission by two French citizens, the department announced on its Telegram channel.
"We inform visitors that security measures at the consulate general have been reinforced and will remain in place permanently until further notice," the statement reads.
The consulate also condemned "the terrorist attack that occurred on the consulate general's premises on the morning of February 24, 2025."
"We are deeply outraged by the violence directed at members of the diplomatic staff," the mission stated. "The actions of the attackers are unacceptable and unjustifiable, as they violate fundamental human rights and incite hatred and fear. It is crucial that such crimes do not go unpunished," the department added.
Attack on the consulate general
On February 25, Russia's Consulate General in Marseille told TASS that unidentified individuals had thrown three explosive devices onto the premises of the diplomatic mission on the morning of February 24, two of which detonated. The incident caused no casualties and no material damage to the building, largely due to security measures taken by diplomats in advance.
The Marseille prosecutor's office confirmed to TASS that the suspects, both French citizens, had been taken into custody. One was born in 1965 and the other in 1977. Both attackers were identified as researchers at the French National Center for Scientific Research.
On February 27, a trial was held in Marseille. The defendants were charged with damaging property in a harmful manner and the illegal manufacture of an explosive device. They were sentenced to eight months of house arrest, during which they will wear electronic bracelets. Additionally, they were banned from carrying weapons for five years.
The Russian Embassy in Paris criticized the ruling, stating that the punishment did not correspond to the gravity of the crime.
