BISHKEK, January 1. /TASS/. The chairmanship of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) officially transitioned from Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan on January 1, 2025, following a decision made at the November 24 session of the Collective Security Council in Astana, attended by the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
Kyrgyz leader Sadyr Japarov stated that during the republic's chairmanship in the organization, it aims to bolster its peacekeeping capabilities and strengthen cooperation in preventing the misuse of modern information technologies by extremist and terrorist groups.
“We will take measures to reinforce the peacekeeping capacity of the CSTO, including by enhancing the activities of the special representative of the CSTO secretary general on peacekeeping issues. Sharing best practices to improve the training system for military personnel is critical,” Japarov outlined as part of the republic's plans.
The Kyrgyz leader also emphasized the importance of addressing modern challenges and threats, highlighting the need to enhance cooperation in preventing and combating the use of information technologies for terrorist and extremist purposes. He also stated that “special emphasis would be placed on fostering practical collaboration within existing operations.”
Japarov emphasized that Kyrgyzstan plans to focus on enhancing dialogue with various international organizations and countries that, like the CSTO member states, share an interest in promoting peace and security. This includes fostering partnerships with relevant bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Kyrgyzstan plans to host an international conference on cybersecurity in 2025, Japarov announced. He expressed confidence that the event will serve as a platform for information technology specialists to exchange ideas and experiences, as well as to develop “solutions to current challenges.”
The Kyrgyz leader emphasized that during its chairmanship, the republic aims to tackle the issue of the spread of destructive ideas among the youth in CSTO member states. He highlighted the importance of scientists and experts from CSTO countries taking a more active role in efforts to counter these threats.
