Poland not ready to transfer MiG-29 jets to Ukraine yet — Duda

Warsaw previously transferred 14 MiG-29 aircraft to Kiev

BRUSSELS, March 6. /TASS/. Poland is still waiting for NATO allies to provide replacements for its MiG-29 fighter jets that were promised to Ukraine, President Andrzej Duda told reporters in Brussels following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"I will say this: We have always set just one condition, which if met, will make it possible to transfer the rest of the jets, as we have previously transferred 14 MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine. One last group is left to go. We must maintain the balance and make sure Polish skies are protected," he said at a news conference broadcast on social media. "If it comes to be that the allies give us aircraft that will replace those MiG-29s in our air defenses, I believe that we should keep our word, as we promised Vladimir Zelensky, and hand over these aircraft."

On July 8, 2024, Zelensky’s office said that, under a treaty on long-term defense and security cooperation that the countries signed earlier that day, Poland undertook to consider transferring at least one additional squadron of MiG-29s (about 14 fighter jets) to Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Zelensky at the time that Warsaw will not be able to transfer these planes without the help of NATO allies.
