Azerbaijani president denies reports about plans to fix Turkish military bases in country

Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan and Turkey now hold more than ten joint military exercises annually

MOSCOW, December 18. /TASS/. Rumors about Turkish military bases potentially popping up in Azerbaijan are completely false, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev told head of the Rossiya Segodnya international media group Dmitry Kiselyov in an interview broadcast on the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"No, there is no need [for a Turkish military base in Azerbaijan]," he said in response to a question from the host. "There is no such necessity. Azerbaijan has been cooperating with Turkey in the military sphere since it regained its independence in early 1992. <...> The declaration on allied relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan, which was signed one year before the declaration between Azerbaijan and Russia, has a section that stipulates mutual military assistance in the event of a threat or act of aggression. <...> This provision essentially eliminates the need to install any permanent military infrastructures on either territory."

He called reports in the media about alleged plans to put in military bases a complete fabrication. The president noted that Azerbaijan and Turkey now hold more than ten joint military exercises annually. According to him, Turkey and its military agencies have greatly contributed to the modernization of the Azerbaijani army over the past 30 years.
