Swiss Federal Supreme Court registers appeal against Valieva’s suspension

A CAS ruling can be challenged in the Swiss Federal Supreme Court only in case of procedural violations

MOSCOW, February 29. /TASS/. An appeal against the ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to suspend Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been filed with the Swiss Federal Supreme Court, its press service told TASS.

"The appeal against the arbitral award CAS 2023/A/9451; CAS 2023/A/9455; CAS 2023/A/9456 of 29 January 2024 was filled today with the Swiss Federal Supreme Court," the press service said.

A CAS ruling can be challenged in the Swiss Federal Supreme Court only in case of procedural violations. If the Swiss court sides with the figure skater, the case will be returned to CAS for reconsideration.

On January 29, CAS ruled to disqualify the 17-year-old Russian figure skater for four years for violating anti-doping rules starting on December 25, 2021. Valieva was suspected of having taken a banned substance - trimetazidine. The CAS hearing involved Valieva and her lawyers, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU).

Valieva’s achievements since December 25, 2021 have been annulled. She was stripped of the gold medals she had won at European and Russian championships. On January 30, the ISU decided to strip Russia of its gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing in the team figure skating event by taking away some of the team’s previously earned points and subsequently awarding it the bronze medal.
