MOSCOW, January 2. /TASS/. About 2,400 tons of oil products leaked into the Black Sea after the wreck of two fuel oil tankers, the Russian Ministry of Transport has said.
"Specialists have established the amount of oil products that has escaped into the sea - about 2,400 tons. This is significantly less than the initial estimate, based on testimonies by the tankers’ captains," the ministry said.
The emergency in the Kerch Strait is the world's first accident involving M100 grade heavy fuel oil. The main way of eliminating the effects is to collect the pollutant washed up on the beach.
The tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 wrecked on December 15. One sailor died, while all others were evacuated. According to emergency response services, the tankers were carrying about 9,200 tons of fuel oil. The spill of oil products caused a disaster in the Black Sea. The elimination of the consequences is underway.
